The Lazy Gardener was created by a group of Year 10 students from Newquay Tretherras School, as part of the Young Enterprise scheme. Based on the North Coast of Cornwall, we named our company 'Tidal' and the inspiration for the idea came from our local surroundings.
The idea We wanted to find something that appeals to everyone, young or old and male or female. The ingredients had to be easy to come by and products quick to make. We looked around us, here in sunny Cornwall, and apart from the sea, we have lots and lots of farms! So we decided if we could find a way to sell manure, we could sell just about anything. Through our team discussions we knew serious gardeners buy well rotted manure by the trailerload, but we thought, what about the people that aren't serious gardeners? They still like plants, yes? So we thought up some products to make their life easier! From talking to some local gardening experts, like James at Fentongollan Farm, we got some knowledge and materials to start us off. We found out that tulips grow nicely when planted around Christmas/New Year and so we created our first product of spring flowering bulbs - all prepackaged in neat biodegradeable boxes - just put them in the ground and water! We also found out that manure was too rich for bulbs, but would work great with leafy greens, so that's what we did later - salad and herb boxes. Finally, we wanted something fun for children to grow, so we added Sunflowers to our range too. To make everything as sustainable and environmentally friendly as we could, we did more research and sourced even better eco-packaging, so we keep Mother Nature happy while we're on this business journey. Tell us what you think! We're young and we have a lot still to learn, so we'd welcome any suggestions, advice and feedback on our products. Please click here to contact us and leave your comments.
